Dear family and friends,

Just a quick update on what has been happening here in Chardon, Ohio.

Nicholas is in his fourth year at Cleveland State and continues to study Information Systems.    He is also working as a library systems student assistant at CSU where he supports the computers and software.  He provides the computer support at the parish library.   He is planning a road trip to Oklahoma after Christmas.

Allison was promoted from Hambden Elementary and is now a 6th grader in the middle school. She is in band and taking part in the “battle of the books”.  During the summer she continued her interest in acting and was Cinderella’s stepmother and a sage in a play called Once upon a Time where Act 1 was Cinderella and Act 2 was Sleeping Beauty.  She also sang a solo during the performance.

Karen is co-chair of the parish library and is setting up monthly displays in the church gathering space.  This also involves purchasing and processing new materials, helping patrons, checking materials in and out and shelving.  She is experimenting with new low carb recipes as both she and Guy are pre type 2 diabetic.  This allows us to eat traditional foods in a way that does not run up blood sugar.  She also helped close down the Hambden school library in preparation for its conversion to a media center.

Guy continues to work for Sherwin-Williams as an associate director.  He started his four year term as a school board member by being sworn in on January 2nd.  This year has been a trial by fire as the high school experienced a shooting where 3 students were killed and one was paralyzed.  The community continues to deal with the trauma on a daily basis.  We are still waiting for the trial to begin.  He bought a new car and gave his older vehicle to Nicholas to replace a Corolla with over 200,000 miles on the clock.

In June we travelled to England to visit Guy’s mum and sister.  While we were there we visited Alnwick castle where some of the Harry Potter films were made and made a stop to see Hadrian’s Wall and Newcastle University.  We visited Bingley and saw the Five Rise Locks and also went on to Skipton to wander around the castle.  Just before we left to come home we watched the Olympic torch relay come through Wetherby.

This year we are staying at home for Christmas.  It might even be a green Christmas, a less rare occurrence here in Chardon but one that we appreciate.
